80 mn animated feature film (2022)

Synopsis
3 tales, 3 eras, 3 worlds: an epic from ancient Egypt, a medieval legend from Auvergne, an 18th-century fantasy set in Ottoman costumes and Turkish palaces, to be swept away by contrasting dreams, peopled by splendid gods, revolting tyrants, cheerful vigilantes, cunning lovers, princes and princesses who do as they please - in an explosion of colour.
Notes
I think I'm a storyteller, someone who likes to tell stories, stories that touch people, and diverse stories - if you've only got ONE story, you're not a storyteller. I like to pull out of my hat or my treasure chest tales of changing colours that give the brain a certain amount of gymnastics: changing everything with each new world. You can't make a feature film out of three stories. All the more reason to do it, especially when it's a clear choice and when you've had so much feedback on short works yourself. Different stories have different lengths. Some stories need two hours, others two minutes. They sound just right in their natural durations, you don't have to dilute them or cut them down (that's the problem with a lot of films that are stuck in the systematic 90-minute format). The show opens with a colourful tale of ancient Egypt and Nubia. I set it up with the Egyptian department of the Louvre, for the added allure of accuracy. This is followed by a gripping medieval legend in shadow theatre, in a stylised image that is not 'normal' but that speaks to people (me first!). Finally, the show concludes with a fireworks display, an 18th-century turquerie, a marivaudage on oriental themes, a Louis XV fantasy that this time makes no pretence at historical accuracy, although it does make the most of the delirious Ottoman costumes and dreamlike Istanbul architecture, aiming for delectation without neglecting some valour and irony. For its main aim is to provide a joyful, colourful and refined entertainment (I'll refrain from saving the world just this once...).
